Don't forget your gutters as an ideal place to grow stuff. By the time I get around to cleaning mine; ferns, douglas fir seedlings and sunflower sprouts (from bird feeder) are happily growing. The gutters provide unobstructed sunlight, warmth from the metal casing, and yummy detritus that the plants thrive on. I love the idea of plucking carrots and beets from my gutters. Why not...they're always plugged up anyway!

Gutters -- what a fabulous idea! The trees across the street from my garden are growing and growing, shading out my sunny herb corner, but the gutters still get plenty of light.

And I think if I were to say, "I need somebody to climb on the roof for some basil!" I'd get a lot more help from the kids than when I just send them out to the garden. I'm definitely giving it a try!
